Fungal Nail Infection

Fungal nails are usually characterised by a yellow or brown discolouration, thickening and brittle appearance.

In some cases, the infected area can produce an unpleasant odour and debris under the nail. Infections do not always show symptoms or cause pain, although most patients find their appearance unsightly. The most common cause of a fungal nail infection is the spread of a fungal skin infection to the nail. For example, athlete’s foot can spread to the toenail if not treated early.

Podiatry treatment for fungal nails

  • K laser: A course of K laser will help destroy the fungus. -Laser typically requires treatment three a week for one week then 2 weeks off. Recommend 2-3 treatment sessions. This may differ from person to person depending on the extent and severity of the fungal nail infection where more sessions may be required.
  • Lacuna method or Nail fenestration is a method where the podiatrist will drill micro-holes into the nail plate, this increases the chance of anti-fungal treatments to penetrate into the nail and nail bed. The patient will be provided with Lamisil spray to use daily. This requires once a month visit for 4 session
  • Where the infection is severe/painful/stubborn, it may be recommended to have the nail permanently removed. This will stop any associated pain and reduce the chance of it spreading to other nails.

Frequently Ask Questions

At the Footcare Clinic, we often see fungal nail infections, which occur when fungi invade the nails, often affecting the toenails more than the fingernails. Common symptoms include discolouration (often yellow or brown), thickening, brittleness, or crumbling edges. If you notice these changes in your nails, it’s best to seek professional advice to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment options.

Fungal nail infections rarely go away without treatment. At the Footcare Clinic, we advise addressing the infection as soon as possible to prevent it from worsening or spreading to other nails. Left untreated, a fungal infection may cause permanent damage to the nail or spread to the surrounding skin, making it more challenging to treat. Early treatment helps to avoid these complications.

o prevent fungal nail infections, the Footcare Clinic recommends keeping your feet clean and dry, wearing breathable footwear, and avoiding going barefoot in communal areas like showers or locker rooms. Additionally, changing socks regularly, disinfecting nail tools, and avoiding sharing personal items like towels or nail clippers can help reduce the risk of infection.
